Puerto Varas and Puerto MonttShort History: Puerto Varas is a town located in the southern Chilean province of Llanquihue, in the Los Lagos Region. Only 20 km from Puerto Montt, located on the shore of the Lake Llanquihue, one of the largest natural lakes in South America. The perfect cone of Osorno volcano and the snowcapped peaks of Mt. Calbuco and Mt. Tronador are clearly visible from the lakefront. On the western shore of Llanquihue Lake are the tourist localities of Puerto Octay, Frutillar and Llanquihue. The city of Puerto Varas, also known as "the city of roses", was founded in 1854 by Vicente Pérez Rosales. The city is named after Antonio Varas, minister of the interior during the presidency of Manuel Montt, when the city was founded. The Montt administration offered lands around lake Llanquihue for mostly German speaking Europeans to settle and farm those lands. Puerto Varas was founded as the main port on the lake, connected by road to the nearest seaport, Puerto Montt. This homsteading program continued through the remainder of the 19th century. Puerto Varas has an excellent hotel infrastructure, wide variety of restaurants, cultural events, in addition to being the departure point for fascinating tourist attractions in surroundings of dramatic geography. We recommend: the Hotel Bellavista, on the Lakeshore, 100 m from the historical Plaza, and the newly opened Hosteria la Gran Reserva. Enjoy. |
Alerce Mountain Lodge.Located just a two hour drive south of Puerto Montt, the Alerce Mountain Lodge is a surprise tucked away atop a mountain, surrounded by an forest of Alerce trees, The first 35 kilometers is along the northernmost section of the famed Carretera Austral and is a scenic coastal ride, passing small settlements and farms. Then a 12kilometer, 800-meter uphill old logging road takes you slowly to the mountain summit and the Lodge. Once atop the mountain, an interesting short walk through the forest brings you to the lagoon and a short 5-minute stand-up moveable platform ride across the lagoon to the Lodge itself. The main living area is cozy, with over-stuffed couches and chairs, all facing the huge train-engine-converted furnace and lined with floor to ceiling windows providing spectacular views out to the forest. There is also an indoor barbecue area in case inclement weather precludes the traditional Chilean "asado" which you will enjoy during your stay.In the same area but on a three-step higher area is the well-stocked bar and charming dining area. Meals are "country gourmet", with creative menus and artistic presentation in addition to being sufficient and tasty. The main building of the Lodge has two rooms on the main level and four rooms on the second floor. There are three "cabins" just a short distance from the main building, reached by boardwalks. Each room has a heater to keep it toasty warm. Each room is tastefully decorated, with warm quilts, plump pillows, dresser with plenty of drawers, a small closet and plenty of light, including strategically placed over-the-bed reading lights. The bathroom boasts a hair dryer, ample space to put toiletries and plenty of hot water. During your stay you will have a choice of activities, centered around exploring the forest with its unique Alerce trees. Walks can be challenging or easy and are tailored to meet each guest's desires. The Lodge provides wet weather gear, if needed, but you should have comfortable walking shoes, a hat and protection from the sun.The Lodge also boasts a two-jacuzzi room and saunas, for that perfect ending to a day tramping around in the glory of the wilderness. |
