The word “Iguazú” means “big water” or “lots of water” in the Guaraní language, the mother tongue of the indigenous people who lived there.

It was at the end of the 19th century that this site began to be inhabited almost officially, mainly by Argentine, Paraguayan, English and Spanish explorers . These people sought to expand their knowledge about yerba mate and the different types of wood, resources that were abundant in the area.

The climate is subtropical, with abundant humidity and persistent rain most of the year. In summer, temperatures can exceed 35°C.

With a high rate of multiculturalism among its inhabitants, Foz de Iguaçu alberga a wide variety of cultures. These include Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese and Ukrainian culture. Not counting residents from neighboring countries who decide to move there, mainly from Argentina and Paraguay.

What makes Foz de Iguaçu so famous?

There are many factors that make this place a tourist mine. As we mentioned before, the cosmopolitan feature of its inhabitants produces in the tourist a feeling of comfort that makes him feel at home and, at the same time, the atmosphere created invites him to know and discover new cultures.

On the other hand, we have the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of the two largest sources of income in Foz do Iguaçu. This plant is not only useful for the immense amounts of energy it generates, but also for the colossal infrastructure it presents. This construction has been attracting the attention of many tourists for decades, so it is open to the public to take guided tours, enter the museum and enjoy the activities that take place.

Another, and perhaps the most important, factor is the so-called Iguazú Falls , the biggest tourism driver in the region. These are considered a Natural Heritage of Humanity, because of the immense variety of animal and plant species that live there.

This natural attraction was named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and shares its geography with Argentina, within the city of Puerto Iguazú in the province of Misiones. On the Brazilian side, only 20% of the spectacle can be seen, which are the 275 waterfalls that make up this paradise.

Despite the fact that in summer the volume of water circulating through them is greater, the high temperatures can make the journey under the sun intolerable. For this reason, many travelers decide to attend in winter, when the cold environment helps to enjoy the activities much more.

Among all the jumps to admire, there is one that stands out for its enormous size compared to the others. La Garganta del Diablo, tiene más de 80 metros de alto y 150 metros de ancho, con un caudal de agua imponente para cualquiera que llegue a verlo a escasos metros.

Tourists come mostly from Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, Germany, Spain, France, the United States, England and China. It is important to know that, Foz do Iguaçu provides experiences that manage to connect people with nature, whether one is looking for deep relaxation or adrenaline filled adventures.

The Bird Park is a tourist complex located a short distance from the Iguazu Falls, in Brazil . However, it has had the objective of preserving and caring for the different kinds of birds since 1994, when Dennis and Anna Croukamp, two biologists from Great Britain, decided to buy part of the territory to carry out this feat.

Within its 17 hectares, this reserve protects more than 150 species of birds . These species of birds include the famous Blue Macaw and the Guarani Macaw, both of which stand out for their bright plumage and are native to the area. Also, colorful toucans, parrots, macaws and countless birds can be seen free in every corner of this site.

The Bird Park also seeks to care for other animals. There are many types of butterflies that flutter along the trails. Ferocious reptiles like alligators, iguanas and yacaré, among others. A high percentage of the species are rescued from illegal trafficking.
