Travel Resources

If you are looking for an adventure of a lifetime, an Australis cruise through Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego might just be the perfect getaway for you. From stunning glaciers to exotic wildlife, this region offers an abundance of natural beauty that will leave you breathless. In this article, we will explore the wonders of the Australis cruise and why it should be on your bucket list.

Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are two of the most remote and pristine regions on the planet, located at the southern tip of South America. These areas offer a unique landscape of glaciers, mountains, forests, and fjords that are home to some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife. The best way to explore this beautiful region is through the Australis Cruise, a journey that takes you through the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel. In this article, we will explore the history of the Australis Cruise, the route, the wildlife, the glaciers, the cultural experience, and the onboard experience.

Offering an alternative of 3 or 4-night cruises, from September through May each year, our ships set sail twice a week from the Chilean city of Punta Arenas, and twice a week from the Argentine city of Ushuaia, on Tierra del Fuego.

In short, exploring Patagonia aboard Cruceros Australis is the adventure of a lifetime.

The History of the Australis Cruise

The Australis Cruise began operations in 2010, but its history goes back to the 19th century when European explorers first navigated these waters. The company was founded by two Chilean families with a long tradition in the shipping industry. The goal was to offer a unique experience that would showcase the beauty and diversity of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego while preserving the fragile ecosystem of the region.

The Route

The Australis Cruise takes you on a journey through some of the most breathtaking scenery on the planet. The journey starts in Punta Arenas, Chile, and ends in Ushuaia, Argentina. Along the way, you will sail through the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Channel, and Cape Horn. You will visit places like Ainsworth Bay, where you can see elephant seals, Magdalena Island, home to a colony of over 100,000 penguins, and the Pia Glacier, one of the most stunning glaciers in the region.

Why does it have the exact duration

The Australis cruise is also a very interesting cruise because 4 nights is the right length of time to be on board (to my liking).

When you start to get a little tired of being on the ship you have to get off 🙂

The ships: Stella Australis and Ventus Australis

The cruise has two ships: the Stella Australis and the Ventus Australis, both with a capacity for 210 passengers each. These ships are designed to provide a luxurious experience while sailing through some of the most spectacular landscapes of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia.

Equal cabins: choosing a cabin is very easy!

All the cabins on the ship are the same and have the same amenities.

The only thing that changes is the deck on which they are located, the ships have 3 floors, the most expensive cabins correspond to the highest floors of the ship.

The Wildlife of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego

The wildlife in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego is one of the main highlights of the Australis Cruise. You will have the chance to see a variety of animals, including penguins, sea lions, elephant seals, dolphins, and whales. Bird lovers will enjoy spotting species such as the black-browed albatross, the southern giant petrel, and the Magellanic penguin.

The Glaciers of Patagonia

Patagonia is home to some of the most impressive glaciers in the world. The Australis Cruise takes you to some of these glaciers, including the Pia Glacier, the Garibaldi Glacier, and the famous Serrano Glacier. You will witness the incredible sight of the glaciers calving, which is when chunks of ice break off and crash into the sea.

The Cultural Experience

The cultural experience on the Australis Cruise is just as impressive as the natural wonders. You will have the opportunity to learn about the indigenous people who have lived in the region for thousands of years. You will also visit places like Wulaia Bay, which was once a site of great importance for the indigenous Yamana people.

The Onboard Experience

The Australis Cruise offers a comfortable and luxurious onboard experience. The ship has a capacity of 210 passengers and features a variety of amenities, including a restaurant, a bar, a library, and a gym. There are also daily activities such as lectures, briefings, and excursions led by knowledgeable guides.
