Driving Map Buenos Aires – Bariloche

How far is San Carlos de Bariloche from Buenos Aires? Here’s the quick answer if you have friends taking turns as the driver so you can drive the entire drive without stopping.

Non-stop driving: 981 miles or 1579 km

Driving time: 17 hours, 52 minutes

This is a very long trip, so it is not very realistic to drive without stopping.

Let’s say you’re actually planning a road trip to San Carlos de Bariloche and want to stop along the way to explore. If it’s a real road trip, you might want to visit interesting places along the way or maybe eat at a great restaurant.

Road trip: 1 day of driving

With the complete itinerary planned, we can estimate the total travel time for this trip.

Travel time: 16.5 hours on the road

Now let’s say you have a private jet and you can fly the fastest possible straight line between Buenos Aires, Argentina and San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina.

Due to the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the “great circle” or “straight line” distance, which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this shows up as a curve on the map, and this is usually the route commercial airlines will take, so it’s also a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you’ll rack up.

Flight distance: 837 miles or 1347 km

Flight time: 2 hours, 10 minutes

The flight distance in a straight line is 144 miles less than driving on the highway, which means that the driving distance is approximately 1.2 times the flight distance.

Your plane flies much faster than a car, so the flight time is about 1/8 of the time it would take you to drive.

This is a medium haul flight, so unless you have a nice private plane, you may be booking a commercial flight.

In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and hail a taxi on the tarmac, land at the other airport, and reach your destination.

To do

Since Bariloche is one of those increasingly rare places that goes through four distinct seasons, there’s never a bad time of year to visit.

The world-class skiing and snowboarding at Catedral Alta Patagonia (Argentina’s largest ski resort) is the area’s biggest draw (high winter season runs from July to September), but there are plenty of other ways to spend outdoor time.

For astonishingly expansive views of Lake Nahuel Huapi and the surrounding mountains and forests, climb to the top of Cerro Catedral on the chairlift, which operates year-round.

Many visitors head here for the stunning views, stupendous scenery, and brilliant ski facilities that make it South America’s premier ski resort. The town has a very alpine look due to its charming Swiss-style chalets.

It is best represented by the charming Civic Center and many little homey chocolate shops can be found here and there. An amazing place to visit, there is a plethora of things to do in Bariloche for visitors and it is well worth checking out when in Argentina.

Given Bariloche’s topographical diversity, hiking (Refugio Frey, Cerro Llao Llao, and Cerro Campanario are among the most popular) is a sublime way to pass the time. If you prefer a slower pace, go fishing or horseback riding.

The actual city of Bariloche is easy to explore on foot and takes only a few hours. Start by strolling down La Calle Miter , which is lined with little shops for souvenirs and chocolate. (Bariloche is considered the chocolate capital of Argentina). Then head to the main square, civic center, and Alejandro Bustillo-designed cathedral for a dose of history and architecture.
