Things to do in Valparaíso: An unforgettable trip to the Pacific jewel

If you’ve ever wondered: Why do so many people speak fondly of Valparaíso? Well, let me tell you. Valparaíso, affectionately known as ‘Valpo’ by the locals, is a city that, when you visit, leaves a mark on your heart. It is a unique blend of culture, art and nature that is rarely found elsewhere in the world.

The hills tell stories

As you walk through Valpo’s narrow streets, you will notice the brightly colored houses and artistic murals on every corner. Imagine a place where every wall tells a story, every staircase leads to a secret and every lookout gives you a breathtaking view. That’s Valparaíso.

A port that sings

The port of Valparaíso is not only a place for ships and goods. Did you know that it is the beating heart of the city? Here, between the sound of seagulls and the smell of sea salt, you can feel the true essence of Valpo. It is as if the sea were whispering to you ancient stories of sailors and adventurers.

Art lives here

Do you like art? Then you will fall in love with Valpo. The streets of this place are a live canvas. It is impressive how urban art has turned this city into an open-air gallery. And you know the best part? Many times, the artists are right there, creating their work. It is as if Picasso and Frida Kahlo had been carried away by the magic of this city.

Flavors that conquer

Oh, and don’t get me started on the food. Have you ever tasted a good plate of fresh seafood with an ocean view? If the answer is no, Valparaíso is waiting for you with open arms. And if you prefer something sweet, the churros filled with manjar are a must. Imagine a perfect combination of crunchy and soft that melts in your mouth. That’s what awaits you here.

The beautiful and bustling hillside port of Valparaíso is known for being one of the homes of the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who died in 1973. This colorful city is recognized worldwide as a Unesco World Heritage Site, a well-deserved accolade given its photogenic architecture, rich history and cultural currents. If you like history, street art and bohemian life, Valparaíso is a must-see. Don’t miss a walk through the neighborhoods of Cerro Alegre, Cerro Bellavista and Cerro Concepción. These are the best things to do and see in Valparaíso, Chile, known as the Jewel of the Pacific.

To get here, take the Espiritu Santo funicular and plot on the map what you want to see. It clearly shows the labyrinth of murals scattered around the Cerro Bellavista area. Since its opening in the 1990s, this open-air museum has attracted a large number of art aficionados with its eclectic mix of murals, some 20 in all. One only has to stroll through it to contemplate its vibrant diversity: abstract kinetic sculptures, impressionist and surrealist styles.

2. Take a look at Balmaceda Arte Joven

Feel like unleashing your creativity while you’re in town? You’ve come to the right place. This curiosity is part art gallery and part cultural center, and offers classes for artists of all ages. Balmaceda Arte Joven offers workshops in theater, writing, animation, visual arts, photography and even online courses. Most classes, shows and events are affordable or free, so it’s a must stop if you’re in the Cerro Alegre neighborhood.

It’s time to enjoy the sea breeze. The bay of Caleta Portales satisfies all the senses: for starters, it is a visual feast to watch the fishermen unload the day’s silvery catch from their colorful boats. Fresh produce is sold daily at the fish market, and if you don’t feel like cooking, head to the small stalls specializing in fresh mussels and ceviche. Now stroll along the boardwalk and the pier: we assure you that you will see sea lions yawning and pelicans waddling.

4. Have a pint at La Playa Bar

Near Plaza Sotomayor, Bar La Playa is the oldest bar in Valparaíso. It dates from the early 20th century and boasts a cluttered interior, to which the original woodwork adds another layer of historic charm. Order a pint and check the menu of the day, which usually consists of fresh seafood. This picturesque corner is also famous for its paila marina, a traditional Chilean seafood soup made with fresh clams and mussels.

Once at the top, you will reach one of the oldest streets in the city, Paseo Yugoslavo. Take a stroll admiring the numerous viewpoints from which spectacular stretches of the bay can be seen. As you descend, you will find cozy cafes, bars and art galleries, as well as colorful graffiti and murals.

6. Stretch your legs in the Paseo Rubén Darío

Valparaíso is known for its ingenious design of public spaces, among which its promenades stand out. The Rubén Darío Promenade borders the beach and the coast. To the north of the city, at the end of Altamirano Avenue, is Playa Torpederas, the most picturesque beach in the city. It is one of the few in Valparaíso, so it sometimes gets crowded. The water is suitable for swimming, but temperatures can be a bit chilly, so it is recommended to come with a picnic lunch. Kayaking and snorkeling are popular activities, and Chile’s first lighthouse, Punta Angeles, is open to the public.

10. Get in shape at the Naval and Maritime Museum.

With more than 17 rooms and numerous permanent exhibitions, it is easy to spend an entire afternoon here.

Conclusion
