The 5 places you have to visit in Antarctica

Travel Resources

Antarctica is one of the most isolated places in the world and as such has managed to maintain its pristine nature with minimal human impact (although climate change is wreaking havoc there).

If you want to enjoy the dramatic polar ice covered landscapes and beautiful wildlife, make sure your cruise from Ushuaia to Antarctica includes our best places to visit in Antarctica!

The Lemaire Canal

The Lemaire Channel is a narrow passage on the Antarctic Peninsula that is breathtakingly beautiful to navigate. On all sides you’ll be surrounded by towering peaks, plummeting glaciers, and glistening icebergs.

It is also a dream come true for lovers of marine life, as you will be able to see all kinds of seals and even whales, including humpback whales and orcas! No matter how cold it is, we guarantee that you will stay out on deck for fear of missing something!

Deception Island

Deception Island always turns out to be a highlight of Antarctica trips as it is incredibly beautiful and has a human element to the old whaling station. But why the name Deception Island? Because although it looks like an island, it is a caldera of an active volcano!

The waters there are a bit warmer than the rest of the surrounding seas, making it a popular place for people to do the polar plunge.

Vernadsky Research Station

No trip to Antarctica would be complete without spending some time in a working science base, and thankfully you can do just that at the Vernadsky Research Station!

This Ukrainian-run base has a lot of history, and today the scientists working there open their doors to visitors.

They even have the southernmost bar in the world!

South Shetland Islands

The South Shetland Islands are a small group of islands about 120 km north of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Their location makes them one of the most visited places on the peninsula, and they are a great place to visit in Antarctica due to the huge population of elephant seals and penguins.

South Georgia and Sandwich Islands

Although the South Georgia and Sandwich Islands do not actually belong to Antarctica (they are part of the UK), we had to list them as the top places to visit without mentioning this place.

They have been called the Serengeti of the Southern Ocean because of the abundance of wildlife that congregates there.

Hundreds of thousands of king penguins can be seen on the beaches, 4-ton elephant seals fighting each other for a mate, and the world’s largest bird, the Wandering Albatross.

South Georgia is included in some Antarctic travel itineraries, so if you have time, we recommend that you visit it.
